Mpumalanga police have arrested four men who were allegedly involved in vigilante acts that claimed six lives

The three tavern owners and one employee were arrested following the brutal killing of six people in KaBokweni, Sifunindlela, Khumbula and Clau-Clau in the Mbombela municipal area.“The horrific incidents,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, “happened in Kabokweni where three victims were brutally killed at Sifunindlela and the house where they were found was burnt down as well, two were killed in Khumbula and the last one was killed in Clau-clau.

Academic studies and experts seem to agree that the cause of vigilantism is usually a lack of trust in the police and rising crime which police struggle to contain. However, linked to this is the country’s violent apartheid past, which has left South Africa a deeply violent country. Super said that the country’s history of discrimination, racial segregation and extralegal violence has influenced patterns of violence today.

Super’s findings reflected stark differences in how residents in poor black areas and the more affluent former white areas deal with crime.
