A farmer in Mpumalanga, South Africa, was apprehended for allegedly repackaging and selling rotten and expired food products. Authorities discovered a large quantity of spoiled food at the farm and the farmer was released on bail pending further investigation.

A Mpumalanga farmer, Pieter Johannes Grobler, was arrested and released on R8,000 bail after authorities uncovered a scheme involving repackaging and selling rotten and expired food. The Hawks , along with the South African Police and Govan Mbeki Local Municipality health inspectors, received information about potential health hazards at Grobler's farm.

A search of the property revealed two warehouses containing four cold rooms filled with meat, chicken, and dairy products, all of which were found to be rotten or expired. Grobler was apprehended and spent a night in custody before appearing before the Secunda Magistrate's Court on Thursday. The court granted him bail and scheduled his case for March 27, 2025, to allow for further investigation. As part of his bail conditions, Grobler must report to the Charl Cillier SAPS every Monday and surrender his travel documents to the investigating officer until further notice. Major General Nico Gerber, the Mpumalanga provincial head of the Hawks, praised the team's efforts in preventing these unsafe food products from reaching consumers, potentially averting a significant health crisis. Gerber emphasized that the postponement will enable a comprehensive investigation and the identification of any individuals who may have been unknowingly exposed to this harmful practice
