Mozambique, which gained independence from Portugal in 1975, is still suffering from the effects of a 16-year civil war that ended in 1992.Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in Africa. It is on the cusp of tapping offshore gas fields that could transform the economy and these are expected to fully come on stream around 2027-29.
Daniel Chapo, Frelimo's relatively unknown presidential candidate and seen as an agent of change, succeeded Filipe Nyusi, who had served two terms as president. Chapo said in his victory speech: "We remained silent all this time, for respecting the law. We are an organised party that prepares its victories."
