Parents in England and Wales are urged to prepare for the possibility of keeping their children at home again, as teacher strike action looks more likely.
This week, teaching unions will attend talks with Education Secretary Gillian Keegan, ahead of announcements later this week over whether their members will go on strike in February and March.
Mary Bousted, the joint general secretary of the NEU, said she was sceptical about what could be achieved, making strike action look more likely.'Support staff have lost 27% of their pay in the same period. And that is causing a workforce crisis in schools. 'We want a pay rise which is incorporated into pay in a proper way. They’ve got to commit to proper negotiation.'The unions say teachers are 'hugely mindful' of the impact on pupils of a strike, but believe that the current situation with pay and resourcing, and the knock on impact of teacher retention is not tenable.
She added: 'Children are being harmed every day by the crisis of the workforce shortages in our schools. One in eight maths lessons are being taught routinely by non-specialists.
