Halifax Mooseheads winger Alexandre Doucet celebrates his goal with teammate Josh Lawrence during QMJHL action against the Quebec Remparts in Halifax on January. - Tim KrochakWhen it comes to learning from playoff experience, there can be as much value in losing as winning.

The Sea Dogs were the host of the 2022 tournament so they had a stacked roster but flopped hard before reaching the peak. The Rimouski Oceanic upset them in the first round and it rocked everyone involved so hard, management went with the nuclear option of firing head coach Gordie Dwyer and parachuting in UNB legend Gardiner MacDougall a few weeks before the tournament. They were desperate times but the last resort worked, with the Sea Dogs hoisting the Cup on home ice.

"I had a lot of unique experiences in Saint John," said Lawrence, who only had one assist in the five-game loss to Rimouski but redeemed himself with six points in four Memorial Cup games. "I learned a lot that year," Doucet said."It's all the little details that are important. It's so tight in the playoffs. It's not like tic-tac-toe plays, it's all greasy goals. You have to bring shots from the D and get tips and rebounds. You have to finish your hits and block shots. It's not about points, it's just winning games. And it's never 10-0, it's always tight games.

Doucet was more of a supporting player on that team but now he's the QMJHL goals champion, the third-highest scorer in the league and an important leader for Halifax so his personal career arc is one he hopes his teammates take into account heading into the series with Cape Breton. The second-overall Mooseheads are the heavy favourites against the 11th-place Eagles.

No other Halifax players have more than five games of QMJHL playoff experience. There was no post-season in 2020 because of COVID-19 and the Mooseheads didn't qualify for the 2021 post-season. Last year's team lost to the Bathurst Titan in five games in the first round.
