The Italian cavalry seems to have rode in too late to rescue Toronto FC.

With the defeat, TFC sits eight points out of playoff position with six teams to leap over and only 13 games remaining to play.

“We’re getting closer and closer to the end of the season and we’re talking about how we can turn it around and keep going, and we still have to believe that,” Bono added. “Even in a tough time like this, it’s important for us to learn from what didn’t happen for us and take some positives and try to keep it going. We have to take it one game at a time right now. That’s the most important thing.”

Montreal ’keeper James Pantemis made a big, leaping save on a Shane O’Neill header in the dying minutes to save the victory.Montreal dominated possession and recorded 19 shots to seven by TFC. The hosts also had five shots on goal while Toronto had four. The match marked the 29th consecutive MLS game that TFC has allowed a goal. That equals the third-longest run without a shutout in league history. The match also marked the second straight game in which TFC failed to score.

“Yeah, that’s been a challenge,” said TFC coach Bob Bradley. “I keep saying the first half of the season , but obviously the way things have gone, it’s now moved into the beginning of the second half of the season … still waiting for players and, at times, some injuries making the lineup thin. Today’s another example, we lose Oso and we have to sort of change our idea of how we want to play. That’s not ideal. But obviously you have to find a way to keep everybody going.
