The solution was to effect a complete rethinking of the foyer. Out went the Norma Desmond staircase, and the upper atrium was closed in, adding extra floor space upstairs. In its place, he designed a comfortable seating nook next to the front door with a low bench to create a spot to sit and remove boots, and a new floating staircase at the side with a short turn at the bottom.
The other problem was worse, from a structural standpoint: two rows of trendy 1980s columns throughout the main floor, seven in all, that seemed to have been deliberately placed exactly where they were most inconvenient. Underfoot, warm-neutral 24 x 48 porcelain tiles are sturdy, low maintenance and provide visual relief among all the wood surfaces. Overhead lighting is subtle rather than overtly decorative: consisting of repeating thin strips in the ceiling, it emphasizes the simple, linear geometric language spoken by vertical wood grain, rectilinear cabinetry, slatted walls and even the grout lines of the tile floor.
