Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has arrived in Stilfontein to address the ongoing impasse between law enforcement and illegal miners, with controversial measures taken to clamp down on illegal mining operations.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has arrived in Stilfontein , where he is set to hold discussions with provincial officials, local authorities, and mining experts regarding the ongoing impasse between law enforcement and illegal miners. Two weeks prior, Mchunu met with community leaders and intensified Operation Vala Umgodi to combat illegal mining. The minister is expected to hold another roundtable discussion on the matter.
The operation, however, has seen controversial measures taken, including cutting off food, water, and medical supplies to the miners underground, leading to concerns from the South African Human Rights Commission and the Council of Churches
