Mike Drew: In snowy Alberta landscape, ducks reign yyc
There was a bunch of them gathered around spilled grain near where the Alyth rail yards meet the Bow River and I was grabbing pictures and video of them as they huddled against the cold. Some of them were snarfing up the loose kernels but most of them were low against the snow. They are cool little birds, diving ducks that like to bob in the current and then dive down to the river bottom to feed. Close by me, one of them — a black-and-white plumed male — was preening in an eddy along the shore while further upstream a female chugged along against the river’s flow with a little cloud of midges for accompaniment.Article contentMike Drew/Postmedia
A good-sized flock of mallards was on the water while a couple of dozen geese sat on the ice along the bank. At a backwater where a spring-like seep from below the weir embankment kept the ice at bay, a pair of mallards splashed around with a quintet of geese as a pair of mergansers flew swiftly past toward parts unknown.Article contentMike Drew/Postmedia
I took three more cursory swipes with the snow shovel and then bolted for the house and my cameras. Quickly, I crossed the street and saw where the tracks went but because they headed to the backyard of the house, I decided not to follow them. Some people get a little touchy about strangers in their yard.
It was fun watching the mallards waddle but I kept thinking about that bobcat so I headed back to the house. In vain, of course.
