Poland coach Czeslaw Michniewicz denied Mexico were the favourites in their World Cup Group C opener today, saying all the teams at the tournament fully deserved to be there.
Poland, playing in their ninth World Cup, have not made it past the group stage since 1986 and will face Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Argentina in a bid to reach the knockout stages in Qatar.
Asked whether Mexico were the favourites, given the last time they failed to make it to the knockout stage was back in 1978, Michniewicz disagreed. "We are all at the World Cup, we feel as important as our opponents in the group. We don't give them any special rank." The last time Poland won their opening World Cup game was nearly 50 years ago, when they beat Argentina 3-2 in 1974 and went on to take third place after beating Brazil 1-0.
