Forecasters have delivered their verdict after the colourful light display was spotted in Greater Manchester on Thursday night
The Northern Lights lit up UK skies from Scotland down to Cornwall on Thursday night. The dancing hues of green, purple and pink were spotted up and down the country after two solar flares collided with the Earth bringing the aurora to lower levels than usual.
Jonathan Vautrey, Met Office meteorologist, said Thursday night had “pretty ideal conditions” with “very little cloud”, making it easier to spot the aurora displays. Keen stargazers took to social media to share their photos of the event as the lights were spotted in Irlam in Salford, Greater Manchester, Ambleside in the Lake District, over the Staffordshire Moors and even as far south as Cornwall.
"Another CME arrival overnight Friday into Saturday brings a chance of further visible aurora to northern areas of the UK, primarily Scotland." A spokesperson for the Met Office told the Manchester Evening News: "While auroras are possible over Scotland in the early hours of Saturday morning, cloud cover and rain will likely obscure visibility for the vast majority.
