Speaking on the outcomes of the ANC’s national working committee on Wednesday, party secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said the implicated members of the SAPS VIP Protection Unit had to be held to account for why they had resorted to brutality.
The ANC has called for the immediate suspension and consequences for all members of the SAPS VIP Protection Unit assigned to Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who were being investigated over their brutal assault on motorists over the weekend.
This was not only cowardly, but runs against the grain of what the SAPS must stand for, which is to protect all members of society. We believe that the majority of the policemen and women serve our country diligently, but such incidents put a serious blight on the police service as a whole, He pointed out that those who had been assaulted by Mashatile’s protectors could have been involved in police obstruction and had to be “educated and brought to book” if they were in the wrong, and their assault was worrying.
It is easy to apportion blame on the deputy president who does not carry out his own protection. People are employed to protect him, and those people are law officers. In this particular instance, we must focus on those who execute the implementation of the law to ensure that they do so appropriately.
“We view such attacks as undermining our democracy and constitutionalism because political parties have the right to take the report on review at any given time, but to impugn and attack the integrity of the woman who is leading the process without any legal basis is incorrect,” he said.Mbalula reiterated that even outgoing and suspended Public Protector Mkhwebane was only rebuked after her reports were found wanting and her understanding of the law was questioned by the courts.
Taking to social media, Lungisa said: “I just finished reading the acting PP’s report on Phala Phala. Even my eight-year-old son Cuba won’t approve it.”
