SAPS mum on whether Mashatile's VIP cops will face criminal charges for assault on motorists
The deputy president abhors any unnecessary use of force, particularly against unarmed civilians. The national commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, has promised a thorough investigation of the incident and articulated the conduct expected of police officers very well.Mde said that Mashatile appealed to the public to allow the SAPS the necessary space to complete its investigation into the incident and take whatever corrective action was deemed necessary.
SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe told City Press that the police have successfully traced the victims of the incident. The process to obtain their statements continues as part of the probe. Mathe ignored City Press' questions on whether the officers are still on duty and whether they will face criminal charges.Meanwhile, there have been calls from the DA that the SAPS VIP unit should be arrested immediately."It is not enough for these offenders to face internal disciplinary processes within the SAPS. We demand that they be arrested and subjected to the full force of the law," said DA MP Andrew Whitefield.
Groenwald added that most concerning was the idea that political leaders apparently deemed themselves above the law, prompting their protectors to adopt these attitudes toward other road users.
