Massive explosion rocks Eskom's Kriel power station

An explosion and subsequent fire have damaged unit 6 at Eskom’s ageing Kriel power station in Mpumalanga.

According to reports, the incident may have been caused by a burst oil pipe. Unit 6, one of six units at the 3GW Kriel station, produces 500MW of electricity.by The Citizen on Monday morning quoted Eskom as confirming the incident but the utility said no load shedding is anticipated as a result of the explosion.

The fire was reportedly extinguished on Sunday night. “It was an oil pipe that bust but all safe now. We are still assessing the unit at Kriel,” Eskom spokeswoman Daphne Mokwena told The Citizen. She assured the public that the utility has “more than enough capacity to cater for demand”.
