Some workers could be sitting on hundreds of pounds they've left unclaimed
If you wear a 'recognisable' uniform as part of your job, then you could get some money back from HM Revenue and Customs . However, there are some caveats to this that workers should be made aware of.
In order to be able to apply for the uniform rebate, your employer must require that you wear a uniform while working and that you have to buy, clean, repair, or replace it yourself. Martin warned on this week's episode of the Martin Lewis Podcast that there isn't much time left to claim the rebate as the new tax year is just around the corner.Martin said: "There is no need to pay anyone to do this, you fill in the P87 form on the gov.uk website...
"Dead easy to do there's information online, it's a P87 form, the exact allowance depends on the industry that you're in but lots of people are missing out and I mean it's not much money, the basic one if you back claim five years is £60 in your pocket as a basic rate taxpayer, £120 as a higher rate tax payer but some other industries it can be more."
HMRC has highlighted on its website that workers can either make a claim for the actual amount they've spent on a uniform but they will need receipts. Otherwise the flat rates will apply. Furthermore, if you are self-employed and file a Self Assessment tax return, then you must make the uniform claim through the tax return instead of the P87 form.
