The Money Saving Expert founder said one couple made £80,000 and thousands of others can do it too
Martin Lewis has flagged a golden chance for people to significantly boost their state pension, sharing the story of one couple who upped theirs by a whopping £80,000. He's urging people to act swiftly as time is ticking on this opportunity.
But come April 2025, you'll only be able to top up your contributions for the last six tax years. "This is a serious amount of cash," declared Martin Lewis, recounting how a couple ramped up their state pension by £80,000 by shelling out £8,500 for missed National Insurance years.
Martin said: "Millions of people are missing National Insurance years. You might have spent years abroad, you might have had a low income, a career break... So my clarion call today is about check now if you can buy missing years." Following that, investigate whether you can fill any gaps for free. For instance, you could be entitled to free National Insurance credits if you were eligible for Child Benefit but didn't claim it, or if you've been a grandparent providing childcare.
