The delicacy involved in creating these fictional – and highly entertaining – works should not be underestimated
Two of my favourite films recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of their respective releases, Whit Stillman’s The Last Days of Disco and Mike Judge’s Office Space .
By my estimation, the current appetite for films built on a foundation of decency — characters who are generally quietly moral people leading modest, comfortable lives — is very slim. Which means that I thought the current appetite for The Last Days of Disco would be slim, too. Stillman and Judge’s characters are gentle contrarians with a soul, people I would date or trust my children with . In The Last Days of Disco, assistant district attorney Josh tells Alice , who he’s in love with, that he’s someone who takes no for an answer. In Office Space, Michael Bolton , who is played by David Herman, is smart, nerdy and an enthusiastic fan of gangsta rap.
Of course, this emotional esthetic is very much out of fashion today even in dramatic comedies, with films such as BlacKkKlansman that heap knowing scorn on one-dimensional villains being much more the norm.
