‘Is this real life? Is this just fantasy?’ | SaltWire
“I was traveling with my own band for a dozen years and, basically, every single show we did people would come up to me after the show – while we were milling around in forays meeting fans – and they would tell me I sounded just like Freddie Mercury. I always took it as a huge compliment because I noticed how highly regarded he had always been,” Martel said.
Then there was the seminal moment in 2011 when he heard Roger Taylor, drummer for Queen, was working towards putting together a tribute band. “I didn’t grow up wanting to be a tribute artist and sing someone else’s music, but when this opportunity came up, I thought this feels different than just typical tribute artist type of thing because I’m getting to work with the original artists,” he said, noting again Taylor’s involvement.
“There was something magical that happened when those guys got together in a studio,” he said. “I think they knew how to strike a perfect balance between being serious about their music – they were serious virtuosos’ musicians, each one of them – as well as great songwriters, but also not take themselves too seriously. There was a great amount of fun built into their music … an appropriate amount of camp and ridiculous, but also very serious, advanced music.
“I was avoiding it because it’s so hard to do,” he said, noting it was his manager who encouraged him to do the video. “I spent a week practicing it and then made the video and I released that video just before the biopic came out so it was a great synergy of things all happening at once … a great shot in the arm for sure.”“We are excited to be hosting a world-class act such as Marc Martel right here in Truro,” said RECC director of partnerships and communications Mike Smith.
