Yanga Wayithi, 35, serving a six-month sentence for theft and trespassing, escaped from Pollsmoor Correctional Centre in the Western Cape. Police have launched a manhunt and urge the public to report any suspicious activity.

Police in the Western Cape have launched a manhunt for an escaped prisoner from Pollsmoor Correctional Centre . The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed that Yanga Wayithi , 35, escaped from the facility. Wayithi was serving a six-month sentence for theft and trespassing. He was part of a work team responsible for maintaining the prison grounds.

DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo stated that the South African Police Service (SAPS) has been notified and a case of escape from lawful custody has been opened. Nxumalo added that the DCS tracing team is actively working to ensure Wayithi's swift re-arrest. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities as the manhunt continues. This incident comes after another inmate, Martin Jackson, escaped from Pollsmoor Prison earlier this month. Jackson was admitted to the facility on April 10, 2015, and was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery, theft, and possession of a firearm with ammunition. The escape of two inmates raises concerns about the security measures at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre and the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding these incidents
