Julian Alvarez is moving to Atletico Madrid after an £81.5m fee was agreed between the two clubs
For Manchester City, in allowing Julian Alvarez to move to Atletico Madrid they will be losing a player who has been tremendously impactful in a supporting role.
Alvarez only arrived at the club in 2022 from Argentinian side River Plate in a £14m deal on a five-year contract. With two years of that contract down his remaining book value on the accounts stood at £8.4m, meaning that anything over and above that would represent profit for City. The Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules have taken up plenty of headlines in recent months, with Everton and Nottingham Forest both hit with points deductions for breaches, twice in the case of the Toffees.
The sale of Alvarez won’t be taken into account for that period as we are now in a new financial year, but that means that City have already given themselves more financial freedom later down the road. The upshot for City is an even bigger buffer created in terms of PSR, more than £400m, meaning that they have the financial freedom to go after the biggest talents to cement their position as English football’s dominant force. The sale of Alvarez will only aid that further for the following year. The addition of extra games in the Champions League under the new model will also see additional revenue factored in for the club.
