A 42-year-old man from Free State , Sechaba Mohapi, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for raping his lesbian neighbor. The incident occurred on December 9, 2022, at approximately 7:30 pm when Mohapi lured the 23-year-old victim into his yard under the pretense of needing her to purchase something. Once inside, he forcefully pulled her into his house and raped her in his bedroom, threatening her with a knife if she resisted or screamed.
The victim had previously informed Mohapi of her sexual orientation when he had proposed a romantic relationship, which she declined. Despite this knowledge, Mohapi proceeded with the assault. The victim reported the crime to the police, leading to Mohapi's arrest and subsequent charge of rape. During the court proceedings, the regional prosecutor, Azola Key, argued for the imposition of the minimum sentence of 15 years, emphasizing the severity of the crime and the prevalence of corrective rape in society. Mohapi's legal representative, citing his status as a first-time offender, requested a lesser sentence. However, the court ultimately ruled against this plea and sentenced Mohapi to 15 years in prison. The court also prohibited Mohapi from possessing a firearm and ordered that his details be entered onto the National Register for Sex Offenders. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, stated that the NPA remains dedicated to combating gender-based violence and femicide within communities. Senokoatsane further emphasized that perpetrators will continue to be prosecuted and sentenced appropriately
