A Mozambican man received a suspended sentence for smuggling 14 minors into South Africa. The sentence has drawn criticism for being too lenient.

A Mozambican national, Moises Armando Mate, was sentenced to six months in prison, with the option to pay a R6,000 fine, for smuggling 14 Mozambican minors into South Africa . The sentence was wholly suspended for three years on the condition that he does not commit a similar offense or unlawfully assist anyone to enter, remain, or depart South Africa during this period.

Mate was arrested at Komatipoort, Mpumalanga, after his minibus, fully loaded with the girls, was stopped by members of the Border Management Authority (BMA) on the N4. The victims were handed over to the Department of Social Development for assessment before being sent back to their country of origin. Mate pleaded guilty on December 27th, 2024, and the court handed down the sentence. Many South Africans have criticized the sentence, calling it too lenient
