The Mahindra XUV 3XO disrupts the compact SUV market with its bold styling, impressive features, and competitive pricing. See why this car is a strong contender in the segment.
Mahindra made a bold statement when it launched the XUV 3XO , claiming it would disrupt the compact SUV market. And they weren't kidding. While its predecessor struggled to make a mark, the 3XO has consistently sold around 500 units monthly. With an eight-model lineup priced from R254,999 to R404,999, it's easy to see why. All models offer excellent value for money , and a standard 1.2-litre turbopetrol engine delivers 82kW and 200Nm of torque.
I spent a week with the range-topping AX7 L automatic, but after reviewing the specifications, the MX3 automatic at R294,999 seems like the best value. It includes features like a sunroof and wireless phone charging, ticking most boxes for buyers in this segment. The 3XO boasts a refreshed design. It's essentially a heavily revamped version of the previous XUV300, but it's much more stylish with its C-shaped headlights that flow seamlessly into the sharply contoured grille. Snazzy Bi-LED projector headlights and diamond-cut alloy wheels are standard on the mid-range AX5 and above. The interior design presents a mixed bag. Limited by India's tax breaks for vehicles under 4 meters long, the XUV 300's design was based on the Ssangyong Tivoli, a decision made due to Mahindra's ownership of the Korean brand at the time. However, the Tivoli's length of almost 4.2 meters meant compromises had to be made, particularly in boot space. Despite this, Mahindra managed to squeeze in a respectable 364 liters of luggage capacity by making the boot deep. However, the fixed parcel shelf and high boot aperture make accessing it somewhat inconvenient. On the positive side, retaining the Tivoli's 2,600mm wheelbase results in a surprisingly spacious interior for this class. I could comfortably fit behind my driving position with room to spare. The 3XO's cockpit has undergone a makeover, adopting a modern layout with a high-mounted touchscreen. While the dashboard features a lot of shiny piano black plastic, it's understandable at this price point. The flagship AX7L does offer soft-touch synthetic leather on the upper dash and door trims. From the MX3 upwards, you get a 10.2-inch touchscreen (the base model has a 9-inch infotainment system), and from the AX5, there's a matching digital instrument screen. One of the key selling points is that the 3XO is the only turbocharged SUV in the sub-R300,000 segment, excluding the Citroen C3 1.2T, which isn't really an SUV. This is a significant advantage for those residing at higher altitudes, as it doesn't suffer a 17% power reduction at Joburg elevations, unlike its naturally aspirated counterparts. However, at 1,389kg, it's relatively heavy for its size, resulting in adequate rather than exhilarating performance. The three-cylinder engine does sound somewhat throaty, but gear changes are smooth, and the use of a proper six-speed torque converter gearbox in automatic versions is greatly appreciated. It avoids the drone of CVTs or jerky AMTs common in this segment. Additionally, there are three drive modes – Zip, Zap, and Zoom – easily accessible via a button on the center console. Fuel economy was commendable, averaging 7.8 liters per 100km, considering the car's weight. The Mahindra XUV 3XO, with its distinctive looks, extensive range, generous equipment, and attractive pricing at the lower end, is a compelling option in the affordable SUV segment. While there are a few minor drawbacks, it's a vehicle that shouldn't be overlooked
