The F\u002D35 .... finally.

Given that the new price tag of $19 billion for 88 jets is more than twice the projected price for the 65 agreed to in 2010, I certainly hope the degree of scrutiny that the previous Conservative government endured will be placed upon this contract.

Of course, this was never the narrative heard by public about the F-35 from the media, who instead framed it as the Conservative’s own narrow and sole-source process that chose the F-35. This overlooked the fact that the Liberal government of Jean Chretien entered Canada into the consortium in the late 90s, and over a period of fifteen years a generation of public servants presided over the F-35 development program, constantly advising and informing governments of both stripes.

Minister Anand points out, “We are also ensuring that economic benefits from this procurement will flow to the Canadian economy.” The fact that the majority of our Allies, most notably the U.S., NATO and NORAD partners are flying F-35’s considering interoperability as a critical consideration, making this choice inevitable.
