“I was happy he acknowledged the transphobia, but he never addressed the actual situation,” she said Wednesday after Chief Steve Williams released a statement promising to review what happened last week when Sorrenti’s apartment was raided during what she says was a “swatting attack” and she was held in custody for 11 hours on gun and death-threat charges.
While in custody, she was booked in by her male birth name, which she changed a decade ago, and was referred to by the wrong name and gender, treatment she called insulting and humiliating.She was released without charges, but the case isn’t closed.“It has come to my attention that Ms. Sorrenti was referred to during her time in London police custody by an incorrect name and gender. We acknowledge the distress this has caused Ms.
Susan Toth, chairperson of the London police board, said Williams’ statement was “recognition that using someone’s proper name goes to the very root of treating everyone with respect and dignity.” Also on Wednesday, the police returned the computers and phones belonging to Sorrenti and her fiancé. Without them, Sorrenti was unable to work and her fiancé couldn’t access their doctoral thesis.
She’d like an apology “but more than that, I just want to make sure that they actually change as an organization so this situation doesn’t happen to other people.
