Chief Steve Williams also pushed back against a claim made by Clara Sorrenti

, saying he reviewed surveillance footage and audio from police cells and determined none of his officers addressed her by her so-called dead name, the male name changed when she transitioned to female a decade ago.

Sorrenti, a gamer and influential online activist, said she was arrested and officers seized her computer and phone, as well as her fiancé’s electronic devices. She said she was held in custody for 11 hours and interrogated about threatening emails alleged to have been sent by her to local politicians. In Thursday night’s statement, Williams shed new light on what led to the search of Sorrenti’s home.

Responding officers didn’t force their way into Sorrenti’s home – a tactic known as a dynamic entrance – and instead knocked on the door and announced themselves as police officers before the occupants answered the door, Williams said. Williams justified the deployment of members of the emergency response team, who are specially trained to resolve high-risk situations.

Williams explained that an entry is made whenever someone has an interaction with police, and that report is merged with prior reports involving the same person with the same birthday. Williams said he personally apologized to Sorrenti and told her investigators have opened a criminal probe into the swatting.“I talked to the Chief of Police of London Police Services and I am no longer a suspect in the investigation. They are now acknowledging this as swatting,” she wrote on Twitter three hours before Williams released his statement. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.
