According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa, the counting process was disrupted after stage 2 load shedding was implemented on Tuesday from 16:00 to 05:00 on Wednesday.

Load shedding kicked in after a generation unit at Kusile power station tripped, adding to the constraints.So far 58% of votes have been counted, and not 90% as the IEC had hoped for this morning.The DA comes in at 22.25% and the EFF scored 10.9% of votes so far.

Meanwhile in the Western Cape, the official opposition continues to run ahead as the party currently leads with 53.44%, controlling 8 councils and leading in 18. The ANC is behind with 19.29%, leading two councils and Patricia de Lille’ Good Party - has gained 4.85%. Western Cape provincial electoral officer Michael Hendrickse said yesterday there 12 hung municipalities in the province and they include Beaufort West, Cape Agulhas, Cederberg, Kannaland, Knysna, Laingsburg, Langeberg, Oudtshoorn, Prince Albert, Saldanha Bay, Theewaterskloof and Witzenberg.The voter numbers are expected to be finalised on Wednesday.
