The Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) in the Eastern Cape was on Tuesday worried about the impact the load shedding would have on the vote counting

This after Eskom announced the implement of stage 2 load shedding from 4pm on Tuesday to 5am on Wednesday.

Provincial electoral officer Khayakazi Magudumana said she was concerned about this as they continued with the counting of the votes cast in Monday’s local elections. But she hoped the officials’ fully charged laptops would carry them through the night. At 6pm on Tuesday, Magudumana told City Press that they were at 89% in terms of capturing the province’s results.

“We are prepared because when we heard about load shedding [resuming] at 11am, we were able to disseminate that information to all the offices in the province, to say they should charge [the portable] lights, laptops and be ready to capture [the results].“Fortunately, every IEC official has a laptop. One has a personal computer in the office and if there are any challenges with the network or with power we are then able to use our laptops,” she said.
