Mohamed Salah, who scored a hat-trick for Liverpool against Rangers in midweek from the bench was recalled whilst City featured Erling Haaland after he was an unused substitute against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday.
Liverpool came alive six minutes later after a ball from the left area by Harvey Elliott allocated Diogo Jota to get an effort in, but City goalkeeper Ederso parried the forward. Liverpool’s confidence was renewed five minutes after halftime and nearly had the lead when Salah ran through following a through pass and forced a finger-tip save from Ederson.
In a tense but lively encounter, the Reds at the other end burst through the defence and watched Elliott head a floating ball from the far side onto the woodwork and over target.
