The Limpopo Education Department is tackling a backlog of unplaced pupils while also addressing the issue of parents submitting fraudulent documents to secure school placements.

The Limpopo Education Department is actively working to address the backlog of unplaced pupils across the province. As of Thursday, approximately 1,600 learners remained unplaced in four circuits: Polokwane, Mokopane, Tzaneen, and Lephalele. The department stated that the majority of these pupils were not initially placed due to applications not meeting the set criteria, but they were given the opportunity to appeal.

Currently, the department is processing appeals and addressing late applications received at the start of the school year. The department assured parents that all qualifying learners will be allocated spaces by January 29, 2025, when the headcount exercise and logistical arrangements are finalized. Parents and guardians are urged to exercise patience and allow the department sufficient time to complete the admission process. The department also emphasizes that all qualifying learners will be admitted to schools within their respective circuits, and transportation will be provided for those placed outside the 5km radius. The department has highlighted a concerning trend of parents submitting falsified documents and fraudulent addresses to secure school placements for their children outside designated feeder zones. The department strongly warned against this practice, stating that it constitutes a criminal offense and can lead to police involvement. Meanwhile, in the Gauteng province, parents seeking answers regarding their children's school placements gathered at the Department of Education's West District office in Tshwane. They expressed frustration and concern over the delays, emphasizing the potential long-term impact on their children's academic and emotional well-being. The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) responded that all pupils who applied in Gauteng had been placed. As of January 20, 2025, a total of 30,498 Grade 1 and Grade 8 pupils were placed in schools. The GDE attributed the ongoing assistance provided at its offices to applicants in inner grades (excluding Grade 1 and Grade 8) and late applicants, including those relocating to Gauteng from other provinces or transferring between districts within the province.
