ICYMI: LETTERS: P.E.I. letter writers against name change | SaltWire
The Guardian of June 28, page 8
, both urging a name change for Savage Harbour, appear quite off the mark. The two imply that “savage” in this case refers to Aboriginal people here and elsewhere, which is quite a stretch. The word “savage” in our language covers a wide sweep of images, including storms, winds, cold, heat, scenery, dogs, bulls, forest life and so on. These terms indicate qualities of strength, respect and attention, a mixture of creation’s wonders.
So let’s forget the nonsense of renaming Savage Harbour. Leave the name alone and take a drive out to this scenic community, observing its peacefulness and water view. But stay away from its wharf area if it’s a stormy day, or you may indeed see a savage harbour.Further to name change for Savage Harbour ... The original French spelling is"sauvage". That could be appropriate as it was the intended meaning regarding the wild weather particular to the North Shore.
