We would like to express support and admiration for our colleagues working as Cape Breton Regional Police Service jailers in their efforts to secure an industry standard wage. This will help address their longstanding staff retention crisis and slow the flow of trained members to provincial agencies with wages that reflect the importance and inherent danger of their work.
Training new staff is resource intensive and not every applicant makes it to the final phase to field their first solo 911 emergency call. We are burning out yet still working overtime shifts so our responsibilities do not fall solely on the shoulders of one or two lone operators. Calls will not go unanswered and will flow to another 911 site in the province if our available members are engaged in labour action. What we are missing in this scenario, however, is the local knowledge and intimate familiarity with availability and location of resources that can be deployed.
