Originally slated to open mid-November, the province's modular emergency shelters on Park Street in Charlottetown were still closed when workers could be seen preparing the shelters for power on Dec. 1. Cody McEachernI have been following the debate about housing for the homeless and am not sure the province or city is addressing the situation correctly. To let the homeless occupy a place from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. sounds reasonable, but having a bed doesn’t constitute providing a home.
Try and envision yourself suddenly in a homeless situation with no money, no family supports, no job, no transportation. How many of us would be able to quickly change our circumstances? It’s a world that can’t be imagined unless you have walked in those shoes.I ask readers to consider some positive and tried methods for solving some of our problems.
I have campaigned in Cardigan for no pipe in the Strait. Problem solved. I also campaigned for basic income guarantee that would build a future for the homeless and poor. It was a successful endeavour in Dolphin, Man. until it was abruptly ended by people who believe there must be no help for such people until they first repent of their poverty.
