Emergency clinics like the one in Whitbourne should be reopened on a 24/7 basis as soon as possible, writes Carmelita Butland Bruce of St. John’s.
The Dr. William H. Newhook Community Centre in Whitbourne has been closed for 92 per cent of the last 13 months. File photo. - FileMuch to my dismay and disappointment over the past while, I watched and listened to all the negative remarks regarding the closure of the Whitbourne Clinic’s Emergency Services.
My first reason is based on my previous frequent need for their services and the countless times of life-saving experiences during numerous years. I was also privileged to witness, first-hand, so many other ER patients receiving awesome and exceptional care; thus, saving their lives.‘They did nothing to stop this’: Whitbourne emergency room temporarily closed for almost 9,000 hours last year
I was a very active member of the Dr. William Newhook Clinic’s Advisory Committee; some years after, the clinic was governed by Memorial University of Newfoundland Medical Clinics Association; and in 1995, the regionalization of the Avalon Health Care Institutions Board was initiated. The latter board included all health facilities located from Placentia to Old Perlican.
The influx of people due to permanent and summer homes, especially the development of Goose Pond, mobile campers in parks and other sites, certainly create another requisite for 24/7 emergency services at the Dr. Newhook Clinic.
