The Outer Battery, located along the Narrows, was once a prosperous fishing village derisively labeled 'Maggoty Cove' by the townies, because, unless served on your plate at a ritzy restaurant, fish smells. Who are these people? I lived in that area for a decade, so I do happen to know many of them: a retired lawyer, a tenured professor who taught my daughter sociology at MUN, a potter who has operated a studio there for 30 years, half-a-dozen pensioners whose family were original livyers of the village, an award-winning radio broadcasting artist and his violin-teaching wife, a wonderful fishing family who have created a “stage museum” where visitors have always been welcome for free – all good...
In my experience, and by the testimony of hundreds of visitors from outside our province who have told me how envious they were of my living so intimately with the foremost historical feature of St. John’s, namely, Signal Hill and this modest hamlet, the Battery.
