Members of LU’s senate greet Dr. Sheila Embleton with words of welcome, but also air concerns following Laurentian’s long journey under creditor protection
Only a couple of weeks into her new job, Laurentian University’s interim president, Dr. Sheila Embleton, has her work cut out for her as she deals with the aftermath of Laurentian’s insolvency.
She thanked Tammy Eger, Laurentian’s “interim interim” president, an LU administrator who stepped in to lead the university for a short period of time last year after the departure of former president Robert Haché. Embleton said there have been several meetings to draft the group’s terms of reference, and this needs to be submitted to the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities no later than Jan. 27.
Laurentian’s dwindling faculty complement has been a bone of contention, as beyond those who were terminated as part of LU’s CCAA process, many professors have left the university since, and were not replaced while Laurentian was still under creditor protection. With regards to the consultants that Laurentian is hiring in the aftermath of the CCAA, Turcotte said she’s “really critical,” as LU is short on money, and already has internal expertise.
