Labour could win '40 seats' across Scotland at next general election

The prospect of Labour winning a Westminster majority was given a significant boost following the party's stunning by-election victory in Rutherglen and Hamilton West.

Labour could win 40 seats in Scotland at the next general election if the party can replicate its thumping victory in Rutherglen and Hamilton West last night, the country's top polling expert has predicted.It comes as Michael Shanks was elected the new MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West in the early hours of Friday morning after achieving more than half of the votes cast in the by-election.

Anas Sarwar admitted last night the scale of Labour's win in Rutherglen was bigger than anyone in his party had expected. He said: "The swing to Labour is markedly higher than I think even Labour expected, and certainly most of us expected.
