The Broncos are defective goods. The coach is clueless, the quarterback is lost and the locker-room culture is broken.Coach Nathaniel Hackett works in the same building as new CEO Greg Penner, whose spouse, Carrie, is a prominent co-owner and heir to the Walmart fortune.

All the giddy anticipation for this failed NFL season in Denver was fueled by the prospect of new ownership with a fresh, enthusiastic young coach and quarterback Russell Wilson riding to the rescue from Seattle. General manager George Paton placed too much trust in Hackett. The coach gave too much control to Wilson. Did Paton and Hackett cede so much power that reigning in Wilson’s influence will now be more difficult?

Misery was born of good intentions. The mistake that has doomed the Broncos to extend their playoff drought to seven long years was the understandable and even laudable desire to solve all the problems at once for a franchise that has been on a slow decline for longer than anybody around here would like to admit.
