The Cloughs' new Cleveland Heights house came with a surprise when they bought it in 1990. They learned it had been the childhood home of Reuben Sturman – the so-called “King of Porn,” who controlled a pornography empire in the 1960s.

Brash and defiant, Sturman successfully fended off government obscenity prosecutions throughout most of his career. He finally was sent to federal prison by a tax conviction in 1989. What they learned over time from neighbors, though, was that Sturman’s mother, Esther, continued living in the house after he had moved away. Reuben would check in with the neighbors occasionally and ask them to snag his mom’s newspaper from the stoop, when he was in the news, to keep her from feeling ashamed by the stories.A man named Mark Lewis Wright bought the home in 1987, fixed it up and repainted the interior, before selling it to the Cloughs in 1990.
Those were gone when the Cloughs moved in, except for in a first-floor bathroom that was adorned in plastic pink tile, Beth said.
