P.E.I. Guardians of the Children install buddy bench in Leger Park
A buddy bench was recently installed in Summerside's Leger Park by the P.E.I. Guardians of the Children . The idea behind a buddy bench, said Bear, president of the P.E.I, GOC, is to reduce loneliness and isolation at children playing at the park. If a kid wants to play or talk but is too anxious to approach, they can sit on the bench to signal to others on the playground that they would like to be approached. - ContributedSUMMERSIDE, P.E.I.
“We spent quite a few months bringing her on the prayer list,” said Bear. “Copper actually reported back to her that we were doing this, and she just thought the world that we were including not only the kids we work with, but included her.”Copper had lived next to Goodwin for 30 years and got to know her particularly well in the last 15. When he thinks of her, he remembers a generous woman who cared for children.
When she died in January 2021, Goodwin requested that any money that was donated during her wake and funeral go to the GOC. In late July, the P.E.I. Guardians of the Children installed a buddy bench at Leger Park in Summerside in memory of Patricia Goodwin – a neighbour of a GOC member who goes by the name Copper. A buddy bench is a bench that aims to eliminate loneliness in children on the playground. - ContributedOnce they saw how much money the community had donated in Goodwin’s name, members thought that putting it towards a buddy bench in Summerside’s Leger Park would be the perfect way to memorialize her.
“It’s known as a safe place for a kid to go if they’re dealing with things or they need someone to talk to,” said Bear. “It’s a place they can go and hopefully someone will come alongside them and they can open up that way.”
