Phil Swern, PopMaster’s co-creator and question-setter, had tried to interest the BBC in a TV version but the idea went nowhere.
However, Channel 4 executive Jo Street believed the quiz would be a perfect fit for More4 and convinced Bruce that “it has been my mission in life to bring PopMaster to the telly”., which built a TV version around the presenter, who said he wanted a low-key antidote to “brash, showbiz” style game shows.
The production company has plans to turn PopMaster into a global brand, with international versions as well as computer games and live show spin-offs featuring Bruce.that he trademarked PopMaster himself when the BBC said it wasn’t interested in the copyright , moved to protect his interest in a television version shortly before telling bosses he was quitting his long-running BBC Radio 2 show.
Last September, Bruce registered a company, PM TV, alongside the two figures who helped formulate PopMaster in 1998 – question-setting expert Phil Swern and businesswoman Vanessa Brady.The TV version cleaves closely to the long-running radio segment with questions ranging from naming artists based on the titles or clips of songs, as well as identifying the year certain songs were hits – often seeing players being just “one year out”.
