Team P.E.I. begins play at the national girls’ field hockey championship in Surrey, B.C., on July 30. Team members are Laura Scantlebury, front, and kneeling, from left, Katie Grace Noye, Molly Doyle, Grace Larkin, Sydnee Chaisson, Maggie Mullins, Charlotte Thompson, and Bree McAlduff. Back row, from left, are Katie Baker , Lindsey Doiron; Brooke Walsh, Abby Larkin, Ellen Carragher, Ella Hennessey, Livi Lawlor, Jessee Hill, Jorja Hambly, Kayla Batchilder, Trish Walsh and Lacey MacLauchlan .

Baker, who likes what she has seen from the young players, is impressed with the skill level and noted there were 40 players on the list for the under-18 team at the start of training. Baker called that number amazing, adding it was very difficult to trim the roster. “P.E.I. is a small province, and for us to go to nationals is a big deal, but from my experience representing a small province, I see it as the best opportunity,” said Baker. “The girls get to play on the field against some of the best players in the country.

“It will be hard and challenging, but it’s also full of opportunity to improve, full of opportunity to show what skills they have and also their perseverance and work ethic. I think there is such a special part about coming from P.E.I. and representing P.E.I. on the national stage. It’s not an opportunity everybody gets.”Team P.E.I. features 13 players from the Charlottetown area, three players from the Summerside area and two from the Bluefield High School program.
