But Ms Harris won backing from another party power centre and power couple, former president Bill Clinton and his wife and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton. They have reportedly been raising money for the Biden-Harris campaign. “Things look much better for the Democrats now than they did last week,” said Professor Marjorie Hershey who teaches political science at Indiana University in Bloomington.

But Ms Harris does not have an electoral base or a clear issue she is identified with. And Americans do not know much about a woman who has spent four years in Mr Biden’s shadow.
