US Vice-President Kamala Harris praised Mr Biden’s “selfless and patriotic act”.
Democrats rallied around US President Joe Biden as he ended his re-election bid, passing the torch to Vice-President Kamala Harris.
Ms Harris herself praised Mr Biden’s “selfless and patriotic act”, saying in a statement that his accomplishments are “unmatched in modern American history, surpassing the legacy of many presidents who have served two terms in office”. “Now is the time to support Kamala Harris and fight with everything we’ve got to elect her. America’s future depends on it,” they said.
The two top Democratic leaders in Congress also praised Mr Biden’s legislative accomplishments without endorsing a replacement. Senator J.D. Vance, Trump’s pick for running mate, said Mr Biden “has been the worst president in my lifetime and Kamala Harris has been right there with him every step of the way”.
Senator Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, meanwhile expressed “respect” for Mr Biden in a statement and sent “warm wishes”, saying “his decision to withdraw from the race was right and is in the best interest of the country”.Mr Biden’s family offered loving support to their patriarch, as his five-decade political career now heads to a close.
