Julie Berman’s killing in December 2019 shocked Toronto’s LGBTQ community.

Colin Harnack was found guilty of second-degree murder Monday by a jury for the killing of Toronto trans activist Julie Berman.

Harnack and Berman had met for the first time earlier in the day on Dec. 22, 2019 near a downtown homeless shelter where Harnack had gone to purchase crack cocaine, and Harnack had invited Berman back to his rooming house to continue using the drug. While the jury heard from a number of witnesses over two weeks, including a pathologist, toxicologist, and DNA and blood splatter experts, much of the Crown’s and defence’s closing submissions focused on Harnack’s testimony.

Harnack’s defence team of William Jaksa and Nabeel Sheiban argued that most of Harnack’s version of events was corroborated by other evidence, including witness testimony and surveillance footage showing Harnack meeting Berman. Keating reminded the jury of Harnack’s 911 call, which was played in court, and argued that he did not sound panicked at all, but calm as he called for an ambulance.
