The Richmond, B.C. native and member of the Chinese women’s national Olympic team hopes to be a role model for both kids and other national team hopefuls in China.
Leah Lum’s start to her Premier Hockey Federation career with the Toronto Six has seen her land a spot on the power play while ranking third in team scoring with seven points through eight games.
“Just from my first year with KRS, to the Olympics this year, the growth of hockey in general has come such a long way in China,” said Lum, who has four goals and three assists for the second-place Six this season. Lum became a top draft prospect in 2018 for the now-defunct Canadian Women’s Hockey League, which combined Chinese teams Shenzhen KRS and Vanke Rays into a single franchise whose schedule rotated between homestands in China and long road trips in North America to play the league’s other teams.
Along with Lum, several other North American and international women’s stars ventured to China to play and help develop the game there, including Finland’s Noora Räty, considered one of the greatest goalies ever in women’s hockey, fellow Chinese national team player Rachel Llanes and American Alex Carpenter.
