A Canadian army vehicle drives past a line crew from Ontario in Marshfield, P.E.I., on Sept. 29 as work continued on repairing downed lines caused by post-tropical storm Fiona. - Brian McInnis • Special to SaltWireJohn Harker lives in Lunenburg. His career in international relations involved spending time with professional units of the Canadian and British armies, in Kosovo and Sierra Leone, as well as time with guerrilla armies in other parts of Africa.

Unlike them, I was pleased when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lost no time in ensuring that the Canadian Armed Forces, with the army’s Fifth Division in the forefront, got on to the challenging but necessary task of damage assessment and necessary response, to help the “civil power,” the people. And warfare itself is a complex matter in many instances, as Canada’s experience in Afghanistan demonstrated. Which brings to mind the fact probably overlooked by too many politicians anxious to score too many points. Our regular force units serving in Afghanistan were able to draw on the trained reservists who temporarily gave up their jobs in the community to serve alongside the professional soldiers.

Which does not mean that the army should be diverted from assessing war-fighting needs and training to meet them; it does mean that our politicians have to make more effort to understand what these needs are now and will likely be in the evolving future.
