GRAVENHURST, Ont.—John Tavares skated Wednesday for the first time in training camp since being diagnosed with a strained oblique muscle, andcoach Sheldon Keefe said he has “not ruled out” the possibility the captain will be ready to play in the season opener in Montreal next week.
When Tavares's injury was announced, it was believed he would miss the first three games of the regular season. “Obviously what his body is telling him is going to dictate … whether it's sooner, whether it ends up being later,” Keefe said.Children from two Gravenhurst schools packed the rink to watch the practice, cheering along the way. Combined with the music the Leafs play through their practice, the arena was quite loud at times.
Star Auston Matthews said he couldn't hear the coach. “Thankfully, we were doing drills that we've all done before,” he said. “It forced me to communicate better,” said Keefe, adding that he likes these midcamp getaways. “It breaks it up. That's the big thing. You get away, get out of the city, get out of our regular routine. It's a long season. You spend a lot of time in your facility. And, for a lot of our guys, they've been in our facility all summer long to train. So, from that sense, it's great. Then you get the guys together, away from the arena.
