Johannesburg Water outlines plans to address the city's water challenges through new infrastructure projects, financial support, and collaborative efforts.
Johannesburg Water stated that it is actively implementing various infrastructure projects to address the city's ongoing water challenges. A new reservoir is planned to enhance supply to the Commando system, encompassing Birkston, Hursthill, and Crosby. The entity is currently repairing 42 reservoirs, with 22 prioritized for immediate consultant review. Repairs are anticipated to commence in February 2024.
Johannesburg Water emphasized its commitment to routine planned and unplanned maintenance to ensure reliable water services. Financial assistance from the National Treasury is crucial to alleviate the entity's R20 billion debt, enabling it to secure the resources needed for water supply improvements. A turnaround strategy, exploring private partnerships for funding and expertise to optimize infrastructure maintenance and minimize water wastage, is under consideration. Additionally, Johannesburg Water is collaborating with the Department of Water and Sanitation to establish a multi-stakeholder platform aimed at enhancing access to safe water within the municipality.
