Eskom says that it will decide by 12th December 2024 whether or not it will cut the power to City of Johannesburg over unpaid debt.
The City of Johannesburg and its five million residents are at risk of facing blackouts with Eskom threatening to cut the power supply over unpaid debts.
As the City of Johannesburg owes Eskom, the national power utility, over R4.9 billion as of September 2024, it is now being threatened with city-wide power cuts until payments are made.announced that it served the City of Johannesburg and City Power, the local utility, with a notice that it intends to interrupt power supply to the city, affecting any areas that are supplied by City Power and Eskom directly, which are most of them.
“The COJ is supposed to cooperate and assist Eskom with fulfilling its mandate of ensuring that citizens have access to affordable electricity. The COJ has breached these obligations by not paying Eskom for the bulk electricity that it supplies.” “The COJ has acknowledged its indebtedness to Eskom, but it refuses to pay the full amount of its monthly bill,” Eskom claims.Eskom is now specifically calling out Johannesburg’s CFO Rendani Sadiki and City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashava, as well as the municipality’s management for backtracking from agreements to pay monthly bills on time made “in more than one meeting.”
